TGI Fridays History
In 1965, Alan Stillman launched the first TGI Fridays establishment in New York City. He resided on 63rd Street, in a lively neighborhood on the East Side of Manhattan near the Queensboro Bridge. This area was populated by numerous single individuals, including airline flight attendants, fashion models, secretaries, etc.
Alan’s intention for opening the bar was to meet women. He realized that social options for singles at the time were limited to private cocktail parties or male-oriented bars that women typically avoided. He aimed to create a socializing spot for people between twenty-three and thirty-seven years old, resembling a relaxed cocktail party atmosphere in a public setting. Despite having yet to gain prior experience in the restaurant industry, he strove to accomplish this vision.
TGI Fridays pioneered promotions like Ladies’ Night, which helped its founder, Stillman, achieve his goal of meeting women. He was surprised by the popularity of bartenders among women and even compared himself to the character Tom Cruise played in Cocktail. The restaurant’s location next to an apartment building with many flight attendants was also advantageous and garnered national media attention. TGI Fridays became so successful that it had to create a waiting area with ropes, which was uncommon for restaurants at the time. A rival establishment called Maxwell’s Plum opened across the Street, and more competitors soon joined the fray.
The Philippine market saw the start of Bistro operations when TGI Friday’s entered the scene in December 1994. Within six years, the flagship restaurant of Friday’s Hospitality Group, which is based in Dallas, had grown to five branches. As of 2023, TGI Friday’s has expanded to more than 22 branches.
Italianni’s Philippines was the first international chain to open outside the United States in February 1996. Its American-Italian cuisine and unique shared dining concept, encapsulated in its slogan “Amore di Merrier,” quickly became popular among Filipinos.
