Potato Corner History
In 1992, Jose Magsaysay Jr., Ricky Montelibano, Danny Bermejo, and George Wieneke opened a Potato Corner restaurant. In the Philippines, flavored fries can be traced back to Magsaysay’s brother-in-law, Montelibano. Magsaysay needed to provide for his family, and inspired by Montelibano’s success with flavored dipping sauces; he decided to start his own business selling flavored fries.
They had to take out loans to generate the initial $150,000 (around $6,000.) in funding. Magsaysay quit his management position at Wendy’s in October 1992 to launch the first Potato Corner cart in Mandaluyong. All of the loans were repaid in full within the stipulated thirty-day period.
They decided to explore franchise opportunities after their initial success. Since franchising was new to the Philippines when Magsaysay worked there, he only knew the basics. Therefore, the original franchisee agreement was informal, a form they had just copied and pasted off the internet. The team swiftly grew to dominate the regional market after receiving funding for growth.
