In 1912, Mr Chua Chiu Hong opened his shop at a little stall in the middle of Ongpin, Manila, and the rest is history. Hopia, tikoy and glutinous balls, all classic Chinese treats, helped make the stand famous. In the 1970s, when the company was founded, Eng Bee Tin was isolated from the rest of the industry. Its success began to decline, and it struggled to sell its products in an increasingly competitive market.

After more than a decade, the downward trend still showed no signs of reversing. Hopia from the stand was not well received because it was always the same. People had stopped doing business with the company, including creditors, suppliers, and even friends, out of fear that they would be associated with a failing business. A miracle was required for the company to make it through the 1980s.

Mr. Gerry Chua., the eldest of the current generation of Chua siblings, assumed control of the company when he was just 21 years old. All he had was a genuine desire to assist his father and turn the family business around.

From its fully automated hopia manufacturing procedures to its stringent hygienic standards of quality control, the company has consistently demonstrated a commitment to innovation that ensures its customers always receive tasty and healthy food.

Eng Bee Tin has been in the exact location for almost 90 years since the company values its history and doesn’t want to uproot itself.
