Juan Francisco Ochoa was the founder of the company. 1974 he opened the first El Pollo Loco restaurant in Guasave, in Sinaloa in Mexico. After that, in 1980, Ochoa expanded his chain into the territory now known as the United States. Later, in 1983, he sold the restaurants in the United States but kept the businesses he owned in Mexico. Since then, the two businesses have inhabited distinct worldwide areas and provided excellent customer service.
Ochoa’s family continues to own the brand that bears their name, El Pollo Loco (Mexico), which currently has over 50 locations around the country (as of 2017). El Pollo Loco (United States) manages around 500 company-owned and franchised restaurants across the United States, most of which are located in the Southwestern region.
