Denny’s History
In 1953, Harold Butler and Richard Jezak launched a donut shop called Danny’s in Lakewood, California; this would later become Denny’s. With the opening of location number eight in 1956, a year after Jezak had left the six-store chain, Butler shifted the business model from a donut shop to a coffee shop. The former Danny’s Donuts is now the 24-hour Danny’s Coffee Shops.
A new prototype structure with a boomerang-shaped roof was designed by Los Angeles architects Armet & Davis in the 1950s, and it was used as a template for stores all over the country. A second prototype, this one with a zigzag shingle roof, was also designed in 1965. These plans contributed to the dissemination of Googie architecture across the United States. The proliferation of Denny’s restaurants near exits from major highways necessitated using ever-more-bold billboards.
Originally called Danny’s Coffee Shops, Butler rebranded as Denny’s Coffee Shops in 1959 to be distinct from the Coffee Dan’s chain of restaurants in Los Angeles. Denny’s Coffee Shops became just Denny’s in 1961. By 1981, the company had opened more than a thousand eateries across the United States. The firm purchased many of the former Sambo’s restaurants, and the Sambo’s midcentury aesthetic was incorporated into some of the newer eateries.
Denny’s iconic Grand Slam breakfast was first served to the public in 1977. Denny’s, a major restaurant chain, became Save the Children’s top corporate sponsor in 1994. Many Denny’s were built without locks; others had lost their keys, leading to the chain’s unprecedented closure on Christmas Eve, 1988, except for only six locations.
From 1990 to 1996, diners at Denny’s could get a complimentary birthday lunch. The offer was for a limited number of meals from a birthday menu. Although some franchisees may have offered the promotion in the past, it became widespread in the 1990s.
In 1994, Denny’s began a program of store renovations that introduced a brighter color palette and, at some locations, Baskin-Robbins ice cream. The revamp was first introduced to the market in Houston, Texas.
Pilot Flying J began incorporating Denny’s restaurants within their Flying J-branded truck stops in July 2010, significantly increasing the chain’s reach across the United States. In the end, 123 Pilot Flying Js were converted.
There were 1,685 Denny’s locations as of the end of 2011. Some of the company’s restaurants are still directly managed by the corporation, while others are franchised. The United States (including the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico) is home to 1,593 Denny restaurants, while Canada has 60, Mexico has 5, Costa Rica has 3, Honduras has 2, El Salvador has 2, the United Kingdom has 2, and New Zealand has 7.
