Dairy Queen History
Dairy Queen (DQ) is a chain of fast food restaurants and soft-serve ice cream shops that originated in Bloomington, Minnesota, in the United States. The business was founded by Sherb Noble, who opened the first location on June 22, 1940. The company offers a range of unique frozen treats that differ from one location to another.
The recipe for the soft-serve ice cream was created in 1938 by John Fremont “J.F.” McCullough and his son, Alex. They convinced Sherb Noble, a loyal customer, to sell the product in his ice cream store in Kankakee, Illinois. He sold over 1,600 servings of the new dessert in just 2 hours. Noble and the McCulloughs went on to open the first official Dairy Queen store in 1940 in Joliet, Illinois. Although it closed in the 1950s, the building at 501 N Chicago Street is recognized as a historical landmark by the city.
In 1962, the company changed its name to International Dairy Queen, Inc. and now serves as the parent company for the American DQ Corporation, Dairy Queen Canada Inc., and other entities that license the Dairy Queen concept. Dairy Queen opened in the Philippines in 2006 and presently operates 75 branches nationwide. Most of these locations are situated in places with high foot traffic, such as office buildings, restaurants, shopping centers, airports, and transportation terminals.
